Despite his prominence within the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society during his lifetime, it was finally in the 1987 Mayor Gallery show that David Carr’s true artistic stature was appreciated in London. Born in 1915, the British painter and collector Carr completed a remarkable series of oils in a post-Cubist style on the theme of man and the machine and a series of inventive late watercolours described by Bryan Robertson in his survey of British Painting for the Whitechapel Gallery as “of special importance in British art of this period”.
