In 1961, he was awarded a Harkness Fellowship, which took him to the USA for two years where he was greatly influenced by the American abstract expressionists, notably Mark Rothko and Morris Louis. Fry is considered a very influential artist of his time and his series of dancing figures have been referred to as some of the most important works of British art in the 50’s.
